PANASONIC – CityNow
A Smart City Admin Control Web App
Admin control for the smart city of tomorrow
In 2015, Panasonic partnered with the City of Denver to create a smart city prototype as part of their CityNOW initiative. Conveniently located just one train stop from Denver’s International Airport, Panasonic is setting a new standard for sustainable, connected living with Peña Station. In 2016, Panasonic approached Clearform, the agency I was working with, with an idea for an entirely new kind of community, one that would prioritize integrating innovation into the fabric of a brand new community from the beginning rather than adding connected solutions to existing infrastructure as an afterthought.
With construction well underway, Clearform was challenged to create a web app for city administrators that would monitor and control 4 initial areas: Lighting, Parking, Digital Signage, and City Safety.
Challenge
The timeline was tight and final technology solutions were still being figured out.
The final solution needed to be extensible enough to accommodate the future expansion of new, undefined modules.
Policy and public privacy were key considerations.
Solution
We designed the application based on insights gained from in-person, semistructured interviews with current and future administrators and in close collaboration with policy experts, city planners, and the engineering team.
The CityNow project launched successfully in 2017.
