IMERCATA
Pipeline Planner for Midstream Oil & Gas
An innovative vision for end-to-end midstream pipeline planning
In the oil and gas industry, midstream refers to the stage of operations that involves the processing, storing, transporting, and marketing of oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids.
In 2021, I was working as a Product Strategist for TheoremOne (later acquired by Formula.Monks). Our client, a company well-established in the midstream pipeline planning and construction industry in the United States, approached us with an idea to automate the pipeline planning process, a many-phased process that is highly manual and time-consuming and relies heavily on personal relationships today.
Challenge
Unfamiliar experience: Nothing like this existed in the industry.
Application consolidation: There is an abundance of applications currently being used and many layers of resources that need to be managed.
Fear of an impersonal experience: The industry values high-touch, personal relationships.
Solution
Through a collaborative Product Discovery, we created a clickable prototype with functional components that were tested with potential clients and shared with investors. Users embraced the concept and the Engineering team demonstrated technical feasibility with the success of the functional components. As a result, several important companies expressed interest in using the product as part of the pilot program.
The application automatically plans around thousands of variables and has a unique ability to identify and quantify the ROI of planning socially responsible routes. We proved technical feasibility and validated the market demand, ultimately helping the client secure a large Series A to continue product development.
